Q & A

admin September 11th, 2007

Have a question about exercise physiology?  About what kind of workouts you’re doing?  About a specific study somebody cited?  Submit your questions here.  I will make every effort to give either a personal reply, or to reply here on the website with a new article, or simply in the FAQ.

This weekend, I rode the BP MS150 from Houston to Austin. It was very, very windy (15-25 mph cross/headwinds). The wind limited my average speed to about 9 mph, so it took 10.5 hours to ride 97 miles. I was exhausted. The next day was to be approx. 70 miles, but my body could only do 24 of it because the winds returned. (I was prepared for the hills, but not the wind). I had to quit due to no energy left from the day before, plus an very “angry” right lower back. How long should recovery be before I get back to light exercise and then to heavier exercise and riding again?

Hi Karen, This is more of a training question than a physiology question and is entirely dependent on your previous training, fitness and recovery patterns. Without knowing you personally I’d say the best bet is to go by how you feel after taking a day or two of full rest with some light stretching.

if you are well conditioned, you may bounce back right away, but if doing this ride is the hardest you’ve ever worked out before, it will take much longer to recover.
